UXO Target Reduction

UXO Survey Assistance - QC
UXO Detection

Target Identification and Reduction

In order to realize UXO target identification and reduction, several steps are taken after quality control of the raw data:
  • Detrending magnetometer data (background signal removal);
  • Peak-to-peak value calculation (obtaining peak positive and the negative values for each anomaly);
  • Calculation of the magnetic moment (the most important factor in determining relative UXO size probability);
  • Calculation of predicted mass and depth.

Additional data from other sensors helps in reducing the number of suspected potential targets during interpretation. Anomalies, caused by natural (geological) features
are often present in the field. (Improved) knowledge (i.e. understanding and data) of the local geology may provide indicators that highlight the natural characteristics of an anomaly. This subsequently reduces the amount of potential UXO targets in the final target list. The following datasets are integrated in the target reduction phase if available:

Multi-beam: Seabed and object classification. Helps with geological interpretation of the area;

Sidescan sonar: Seabed and object classification. Helps with geological interpretation of the area and to determine man-made from natural features where possible;

Subbottom profiler: UXO is often present in mobile sedimentary layers. With subbottom profiler data a distinction between mobile and immobile layers can be made.
Targets will be subdivided into relative mass and depth classes. This helps our clients focus on the anomalies that present the greatest challenge to the project, both in terms of risk and time spent on the id-and-removal campaigns.

Our service has proven to reduce the amount of potential UXO targets significantly. Please be aware that absolute reduction numbers are hard to predict as this is highly varying per survey area and the amount of man-made disturbances to the area.
